AI Thread Summary
On July 14, 2023, a bolide was observed across the Gulf Coast, capturing significant attention due to its brightness and duration. Reports indicate that the meteor lit up the sky in Louisiana, leading to widespread sightings and discussions among locals. Prior to this event, another long-lasting fireball was seen in the same area, raising questions about its origin—whether it was a meteor or a re-entering satellite or rocket. The phenomenon sparked curiosity and speculation regarding the frequency and nature of such celestial events. Overall, these sightings highlight the interest in meteoric activity in the Gulf Coast region.

I didn't see that one, but a couple weeks before that I saw a particularly long lasting fireball in the same general area, longer lasting than I've ever seen for a meteor. I've wondered since whether it was a meteor or a satellite/rocket re-entering.

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
