Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying the best physics journals for condensed matter physics and for staying updated across all branches of physics. Participants explore various journal recommendations and strategies for keeping informed in the field.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that there is no single best journal for condensed matter physics, indicating that multiple journals may be necessary.
  • One participant recommends the Physical Review Letters (PRL) and other Physical Review journals as a good starting point for condensed matter physics.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of following citation trails from a core group of papers to stay informed, rather than relying solely on a limited number of journals.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that multiple journals are beneficial for comprehensive coverage, but specific recommendations and strategies vary, indicating a lack of consensus on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying opinions on the necessity of multiple journals and the methods for staying updated, but do not resolve which specific journals are definitively the best.

What is the best physics journal for condensed matter physics ?
And what is the best journal for all branchs of physics that keeps you on update ?
Thanks

There will be varying opinions, but my view is that it takes more than one journal.

What do you recommend for example ?

PRL and the other Physical Review journals that include your fields of interest are a good place to start.

But you will miss some important material if you focus on only a few journals.

Once I identify a core group of papers in a field of interest, I like to work the paper trails both ways:

Which papers are cited by the core group of papers?

Which papers cite the core group of papers?

For me, following the citation trails of a core group of papers is a much better way to be well informed than sticking to a small number of journals.
