Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around Niels Bohr's views on relativity, particularly in relation to his interactions with Albert Einstein and the broader context of quantum mechanics. Participants explore whether Bohr expressed any significant opinions or concerns regarding relativity.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes the prevalence of Einstein's views on quantum physics and questions whether Bohr ever articulated his thoughts on relativity.
  • Another participant suggests looking for a biography of Bohr for insights into his views, referencing his Wikipedia article.
  • A participant recalls the historical context of Bohr and Einstein's debates, mentioning Bohr's famous quote about dice and implying that their correspondence may have included discussions on relativity.
  • One participant expresses difficulty in finding information on Bohr's views, indicating that most available material focuses on Einstein's criticisms of quantum mechanics and Bohr's responses.
  • Another participant proposes that the lack of evidence regarding Bohr's concerns about special relativity could be interpreted as an indication that he had no significant issues with it.
  • A later reply acknowledges the previous comments without adding new information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on Bohr's views; instead, multiple perspectives are presented regarding his stance on relativity, with some suggesting he had no concerns while others seek more information.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the absence of direct quotes or documented opinions from Bohr on relativity, reliance on secondary sources, and the potential for misinterpretation of historical interactions.

We hear a lot of Einstein on quantum physics. Did Bohr ever say what he thought of relativity?

Physics news on Phys.org
Did you search for a(n) (auto)biography of the man? It should pop up in his Wikipedia article...

The story about the photon scale comes to mind, and his response to "God doesn't play dice."
At least they were in contact until Einstein passed away, so they must have debated a lot.

I looked on the web but couldn't find anything. Only Einstein's criticisms of QM, and Bohr's replies to them.

In this case, I think that the absence of evidence is properly understood as evidence of absence: Bohr had no unusual concerns about special relativity.
