SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on calculating the scandium content in thortveitite, a mineral with the chemical formula Sc2Si2O7. The user, Ron Werner, is preparing a geological display and needs to determine the scandium quantity in 1850 grams of thortveitite. Given that scandium is valued at $15,000 per kilogram, understanding the mineral's composition is crucial for conveying its potential worth to children visiting the display.

PREREQUISITES
  • Chemical composition of thortveitite (Sc2Si2O7)
  • Basic stoichiometry for calculating elemental content
  • Understanding of mineral valuation based on market prices
  • Knowledge of grams to kilograms conversion
NEXT STEPS
  • Calculate the scandium content in thortveitite using its molecular formula
  • Research the market trends for scandium pricing and demand
  • Explore educational methods for presenting geological information to children
  • Investigate other scandium-containing minerals and their applications

Hello,

I am a museum professional developing a small geological display on the scandium-containing mineral thortveitite.

I will display a glass containing 1850 grams of thortveitite pieces.

In order to make the accompanying text interesting for children, I want to inform them about the potential value of this quantity of thortveitite by calculating the amount of scandium in grams.

Scandium sells for $15.000/kg.

But help oh help, I forgot my chemistry lessons a long time ago.

The formula of thortveitite is: Sc2Si2O7

Is there somebody who can help me?

Thanks in advance!
