Determining Best Time of Year to Observe a Star - Astronomy for Beginners

How would I go about determining (to the nearest month) the best time of year to observe a certain star from my chosen location?

I'm relatively new to astronomy and these concepts haven't quite sunk in (which is scary being as I'm being examined on the topic in the next few weeks!)

Any help with this would be appreciated.
