Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the design of home equipment and consumer devices in relation to their ability to withstand environmental contaminants such as dust, debris, dirt, and microorganisms. Participants explore the relevant fields of engineering or science that address these issues, including specifications and manufacturing environments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether consumer devices are designed to endure environmental contaminants and seeks to identify the relevant field of study.
  • Another participant suggests "Tribology" as a related field, which studies friction, wear, and lubrication, potentially relevant to the discussion of contaminants.
  • A third participant reiterates the initial question, providing a link to information about IP ratings, which relate to the protection of devices against dust and moisture.
  • One participant notes that product specifications, which include considerations for environmental durability, are developed by management with input from marketing and passed to mechanical engineers for design.
  • Another participant introduces the concept of "clean rooms," indicating that certain manufacturing processes are conducted in controlled environments to minimize contamination.
  • A later reply identifies "Contamination Control" as a specific field of engineering relevant to the aerospace industry, addressing the concerns raised in the initial question.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various viewpoints on the fields and considerations related to the design of equipment against environmental contaminants. No consensus is reached on a singular field or approach, indicating multiple competing views remain.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference different aspects of engineering and manufacturing processes without resolving the specific definitions or scope of the fields mentioned. The discussion includes various assumptions about the design and specification processes that are not fully elaborated.

Is our home equipment and many other consumer's device usually designed to endure dust, debris, dirt or anything (even virus or bacteria) from the environment which is hard to avoid? What is the field of engineering or science
that studies such issue?

It would start as part of the product specification. Product specifications are written by top management with input from marketing. This part of the product specification would be given to a mechanical engineer on the design team.

"Clean rooms" is a topic that may relate to your questions. There are many circumstances where manufacture and assembly are done in a clean room environment.

Delayed response, but the field of engineering is called "Contamination Control", at least when dealing with the aerospace industry.
