Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the availability of spring semester admissions for transfer students, particularly focusing on universities in Southern California with physics programs. Participants share their experiences and insights regarding the current state of admissions at various institutions.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is unable to find universities in Southern California that accept spring semester transfer students for physics programs.
  • Another participant suggests that California State Universities (CSUs) may accept spring transfers, while University of California (UC) schools do not.
  • A different participant claims that both UC and CSU schools are not accepting spring enrollments, attributing this to budget issues in California.
  • One participant reflects on the challenges faced by UC and CSU schools in recent years regarding spring admissions.
  • Another participant humorously notes that missing the spring admissions deadline could provide more time to enhance their resume and mentions the high costs associated with out-of-state transfers to UC schools.
  • There is a mention of the limited number of transfer spots available at CalTech, indicating a competitive transfer process.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the availability of spring admissions, with some suggesting that CSUs may still accept transfers while others assert that both UC and CSU schools are not currently accepting spring enrollments. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the specific status of spring admissions across these institutions.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference budget constraints affecting admissions but do not provide specific details on how these constraints impact spring enrollment decisions. There is uncertainty regarding the current policies of various universities.

I've been scanning some university admissions pages and cannot seem to find any that accept spring semester transfer students. Specifically I'm looking for schools in southern California with physics programs. I'm working on my Physics BSc and want to go to grad school afterward. Anyone have any insight?

I think cal states accept spring transfers, but UC's do not. My friend transferred to CSUF last spring anyway

Apparently all of the state schools, UC and Cal State, are not accepting spring enrollements. Actually, one of the university's pages said it was due to the California budget.. problems.. Haha. How unfortunate. Even the private schools I checked weren't accepting, though. Oh well, guess I'll have to be patient! Thanks for the reply.

you missed the bus by one semester I guess =(

Yeah the last few years have seen huge problems with the UCs and CSUs due to the budget. I don't remember when my CSU last accepted Spring students.

Hey, stuff happens. Just provides more time to pretty up the resume! Haha. On a side note, I checked the approximate costs at a UC school for an out-of-state transfer student: $55k! Perhaps it would be wise to look at private schools, too. I wonder if I could make it into the 10-15 transfers that CalTech accepts. Ha..ha..
