Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around notable break-ups between famous scientists and the possible reasons behind these separations. Participants share various pairs of scientists and speculate on the circumstances that may have led to their conflicts, focusing on both historical and personal dynamics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants mention James Watson and Francis Crick, Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee, and Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr as examples of scientific break-ups.
  • One participant notes that Heisenberg's conflict with Bohr may have been influenced by Heisenberg's decision to remain in Germany during a tumultuous period.
  • Robert Hooke and Isaac Newton are added as another pair, though no reasons are provided.
  • A participant expresses curiosity about the reasons for the break-up between Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee, referencing a biography that suggests lingering resentment.
  • Edison and Tesla are discussed, with a participant suggesting that Edison's failure to fulfill promises and his reputation for appropriating others' ideas contributed to their conflict.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the existence of notable scientific break-ups but do not reach a consensus on the specific reasons behind each case. Multiple competing views and uncertainties remain regarding the motivations and dynamics involved.

Contextual Notes

Some claims about the reasons for break-ups are based on anecdotal evidence or historical interpretations, which may lack comprehensive context or verification.

Do you people know of any other cases?

- James Watson and Francis Crick (for a while)
- Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee
- Werner Heisenberg and Neils Bohr (due to Heisenberg staying in Germany)
- Edward Teller and "everyone"

Robert Hooke and Issac Newton

Simfishy, since your thread title suggests it, can you enlighten us on "possible reasons why" for those you listed?

Oh, I just wanted people to add in more pairs (along with the reasons why, if they have any, just for some possible insight)

Like, I don't know why Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee broke up (it was said in Chien Shiung Wu's bio that they attended her retirement party - and went to the opposite sides of the room, still not forgiving each other for something).

Edison and Tesla

---(Edison supposedly didn't fulfill his promises to Tesla---Edison was a profiteer, like Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, etc. of his day---Edison also liked stealing other people's ideas and patenting them for himself--that's one reason he had so many)
