I'm looking for a word that I think I heard somewhere before, and would like to use it, but for the life of me can't remember what it was exactly.

It sounds similar to "epistemology" but epistemology is just a branch of philosophy.

The word that I'm looking for is used to find background information, or the origin of something.

For example

What is the blank of your name.

I ran through a few thesauruses, but so far no luck. So just curious if you guys are familiar with this.

Yeah, that's the word. Thanks.

2 minutes, to find the link between "epistemology" and "etymology". Either you guys set that up in advance, or PF is really full of amazing people.

So, I needed a word too. It goes like :
"I found a strange bug in my garden. An blank could identify it".
