SUMMARY

The discussion centers on locating R. H. Gowdy's paper titled "Vacuum Spacetimes with Two-parameter Spacelike Isometry Groups and Compact Invariant Hypersurfaces: Topologies and Boundary Conditions," published in the Annals of Physics in 1974. The author’s website and the arXiv repository are referenced as potential sources, but users report difficulty accessing the paper. A key recommendation is to consult a librarian for assistance in navigating online and library resources effectively.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of General Relativity concepts
  • Familiarity with academic research methodologies
  • Basic knowledge of navigating online academic repositories
  • Experience with library resource utilization
NEXT STEPS
  • Visit the arXiv repository and search for the paper using specific keywords
  • Consult with a librarian for guidance on accessing academic papers
  • Explore alternative academic databases such as JSTOR or Google Scholar
  • Learn about citation management tools to organize research materials
USEFUL FOR

Students and researchers in physics, particularly those studying General Relativity, as well as anyone seeking to improve their academic research skills.

Ok, hopefully this is the right place to post about this. I'm writing a project on General Relativity and need access to a specific paper. I'm not very good at finding stuff online or in libraries. The paper is:

Gowdy, R. H.: "Vacuum Spacetimes with Two-parameter Spacelike Isometry Groups and Compact Invariant Hypersurfaces: Topologies and Boundary Conditions," Annals of Physics (N.Y.) 83, pp 203-241, 1974.

I'm on the authors website:

http://www.people.vcu.edu/~rgowdy/gowdy.htm

and as you can see, he claims that it's available here:

http://xxx.lanl.gov/archive/gr-qc

The only problem is, I can't for the life of me find it on that website. Secondly, once I find it, how the hell do I access it, most of them are blocked (even when I'm on my university network). This is the first time I've had to do any proper research for a project which is why I'm so bad at finding this sort of stuff.

Help please!

Then, go to the library and talk to a librarian about finding stuff on-line and in libraries. This is important; do it!

I suspect that this paper is not on and the arXiv, and, on his website, the author does not state that it is. Read carefully! Go to the library!
