How Does Collision Affect Kinetic Energy in Fish?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on calculating the loss in kinetic energy when a large fish, initially moving at 2.0 m/s, consumes smaller fish entering its mouth at 5.0 m/s. The mass of the large fish is determined to be 195 kg, while each small fish has a mass of 300 g. After 13 minutes of consuming 20 small fish per minute, the total loss in kinetic energy due to the impact is calculated to be 1365 Joules.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, particularly momentum and kinetic energy.
  • Familiarity with the formula for kinetic energy: KE = 0.5 * m * v².
  • Knowledge of mass and velocity units, specifically converting grams to kilograms.
  • Basic problem-solving skills in physics, including conservation of momentum.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of momentum conservation in collisions.
  • Learn how to calculate kinetic energy changes in inelastic collisions.
  • Explore the effects of mass and velocity on kinetic energy in different scenarios.
  • Investigate real-world applications of collision physics in biological systems.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for physics students, educators, and anyone interested in the mechanics of motion and energy transfer in biological contexts.

1. A big fish with its mouth wide open is moving at 2.0m/s towards a school of small fish each of mass 300g. the small fish enter the wide mouth of the big one with a velocity of 5m/s to the opposite durection at the rate of 20fish per min. the big one is motionless after 13min : the big one is able to finish collecting all the available small ones. the total collection time is 13 mins. Find the loss in kinetic energy due to the impact

2. i found out the mass of big fish= 195kg
but how to find the loss in kinetic energy due to the impact?
the answer is 1365J
help me...please
thank you
