New, inexpensive DNA sequencing methods are poised to make huge revolutions in our understanding of human genetics and disease. For example, a company has been sequencing much of the population of Iceland, and combined this data with genealogy and medical records, has been able to find many new genes that confer disease risk, and has even discovered a gene variant that seems to protect against Alzheimer's disease. Perhaps combined with https://www.physicsforums.com/insights/dont-fear-https://www.physicsforums.com/insights/dont-fear-crispr-new-gene-editing-technologies-wont-lead-designer-babies/-new-gene-editing-technologies-wont-lead-designer-babies/, these discoveries could help us eliminate diseases like Alzheimer's in the future.
