Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the observation of a large cloud of smoke over Southeast England, with participants speculating on its origin and significance. The conversation includes references to satellite imagery and comparisons to geographical landmarks, as well as humorous remarks about other visual phenomena.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes a large cloud of smoke visible in satellite images, suggesting it is larger than Luxembourg.
  • Another participant questions the implications of the black cloud, pondering whether it indicates a lack of other clouds.
  • A different participant expresses confusion about the situation, mentioning a shiny object on the ground.
  • Some participants propose that the smoke is likely from an oil depot fire, providing a link to a news article for reference.
  • One participant emphasizes the size of the smoke cloud, claiming it was enormous, approximately a hundred miles wide.
  • Several participants share links to images that illustrate the size of the smoke cloud, comparing it to past significant oil fires.
  • A humorous remark is made about a yellow arrow seen over Bristol, suggesting an extraterrestrial presence.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the nature of the cloud, with some attributing it to an oil fire while others express confusion or introduce unrelated observations. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the exact cause and implications of the smoke cloud.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference satellite images and external links, but there are limitations in the information provided, such as the expiration of some links and the lack of detailed explanations for the observations made.

Anyone else notice the huge cloud of smoke over SE England? Look at the vis-satellite from earlier today - it's larger than Luxembourg!

Doesn't the black cloud mean there is a lack of clouds there?

That's what I thought.. then I thought maybe there was a joke involved that I didn't get.. and then I saw something shiney on the ground..

It's probably the oil depot fire you're looking at.

Yeah that's what I meant. You can't see it any more though, they changed the picture. It was huge - like a hundred miles wide.

Aha! Found a link http://us.news3.yimg.com/us.i2.yimg.com/p/ap/20051211/capt.ny11712112059.britain_explosion_ny117.jpg?x=380&y=303&sig=pQmWFumU2Aceocxgi8aLCw--" (AP picture). Compare the size with Luxembourg in the lower right corner. It makes all the oil fires in 1991 put together look insignificant.

This second picture's a lot better. I wasn't sure what you were talking about in the first one.
