Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the value of a cornflake resembling the US state of Illinois, which has garnered significant attention on eBay with bids exceeding £100,000. Participants explore the implications of such a valuation, the nature of collectibles, and the perceptions surrounding the worth of unusual items.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express skepticism about the topography of the cornflake resembling Illinois, suggesting it may not look accurate.
  • One participant claims to have sold a collection for a much higher amount, indicating that high valuations are not unprecedented.
  • There is a humorous exchange about the word "gullible" not being in the dictionary, with some participants playing along with the joke.
  • Another participant notes that the cornflake next to the Illinois one resembles a dime, prompting further discussion about the value of such shapes.
  • Experts are mentioned to have estimated the value of a different cornflake at a minimum of $0.10, but the unpredictability of eBay auctions is acknowledged.
  • Questions are raised about the overall worth of the US in light of finding a state-shaped cornflake, with exaggerated claims about its value in USD.
  • Participants speculate on the potential value of a collection of cornflakes shaped like all fifty states.
  • One participant reflects on the perception of value, comparing the cornflake to luxury items like Rolex watches, suggesting that perceived worth can be subjective.
  • Concerns are raised about the preservation of such collectibles, with a participant humorously noting the challenge of keeping the cornflake from decomposing.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the value of the cornflake or the nature of collectibles. Multiple competing views and humorous exchanges remain throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes speculative statements about the nature of perception and value, as well as assumptions about the market for collectibles that are not fully explored or resolved.

That's nothing - I sold my "Battles of the Civil War" collection for half a mil.

And not a lot of people know this but the word gullible is not in the dictionary.

It's not?

The Illinois corn flake sort of looks correct. I'm way more impressed by the one next to it. Is it just me or does it look just like a dime?

Of course not, that right hand cornflake is a most accurate representation of Gran Canaria

Experts have estimated it to be worth at a minimum, $ 0,10. But E-bay auctions are unpredictable and it may be worth a lot more to specific Gran Canaria maps collectors.

Is the US worth more now that we have found a State that looks like a cornflake?

I wonder what a collection of all fifty states would fetch?

Well, your overall value has shot up by £100,000. Which at the exchange rate in 2 weeks time should be about 3.4 trillion USD.

Just barely enough to pay for the war in Iraq!

You know, my first thought was that this would be a Virgin Mary or Jesus flake. Anybody else think that?

I think I'm going to have to start eating more cornflakes and hunting for states! Do you think cornflakes shaped like Illinois are the only collectible ones, or can I get that much for other states? I think I'll start looking for OH...that seems like a good cornflake shaped state.

Well if you have never seen what the corn flak resembles, your brain wouldn't create the perception that it looks like Illinois, and probly would have been eaten by the person that found it, I'm sure he/she glad that he didnt...

Just another way how the brain's perception of object's in the means of relation's to another object could make you rich.

reminds me of the thread about rolex wacthes. It's just a clock, and its just a corn flak. well in my perception of it's worth it is... and it's clear that they think its worth that much, just for a rich guy to show off to his friends, and say (hey look i got somthing you don't got)... makes me wonder what the resale value of that corn flak is :D!
