SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on resources for learning statics, particularly in engineering contexts related to stability under tensile and compressive stress. The user seeks comprehensive materials beyond Wikipedia and Khan Academy, specifically looking for insights into stress versus strain and the stability of shapes. Recommended resources include "Engineering Mechanics: Statics" and "Mechanics of Materials," both authored by Russell C. Hibbeler, which cover essential concepts in statics and mechanics of materials.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles, particularly mechanics.
  • Familiarity with concepts of tensile and compressive stress.
  • Knowledge of stress versus strain and elastic versus plastic deformation.
  • Basic engineering terminology related to stability and structural analysis.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Engineering Mechanics: Statics" by Russell C. Hibbeler for foundational knowledge.
  • Explore "Mechanics of Materials" by Russell C. Hibbeler for advanced concepts in material behavior.
  • Investigate online courses or lectures specifically focused on statics and structural stability.
  • Review case studies on stress analysis in buildings and aircraft to understand practical applications.
USEFUL FOR

Students of engineering, educators teaching statics, and professionals involved in structural analysis and design will benefit from this discussion.

I am attempting to learn more about the field of statics, engineering concepts related to stability under tensile and compressive stress, and related topics. I realize this a broad area of physics but educating myself piece by piece on wikipedia is tedious and disjointed, and Khan academy doesn't have any lessons on these subjects.

I've read quite a bit about stress v.s. strain and elastic v.s. plastic deformation but I'm looking for resources on the finer points such as what makes one shape more stable than another or the various types of stress which might act on a building or an aircraft, that sort of thing.

Could anyone recommend a good place to start; web pages or books?
