Participants share their experiences and technical challenges related to quoting excerpts from original posts.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports difficulty quoting original posts that contain LaTeX delimited by double dollar signs, noting that the preview does not display the LaTeX correctly.
  • Another participant claims that quoting and replying works fine for them, suggesting variability in the experience.
  • A participant references @Greg Bernhardt's indication that double dollar signs are retained for reading original posts, implying that the issue may be due to other factors.
  • One participant clarifies that their issue was specifically with quoting excerpts rather than entire posts, suggesting that this may affect how MathJax processes the quoted content.
  • Another participant mentions a known phenomenon where MathJax marks are often lost when quoting excerpts, and suggests replying to the entire post as a workaround.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing experiences with quoting LaTeX, indicating that there is no consensus on the issue. Some agree on the challenges of quoting excerpts, while others report no problems.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights limitations in the quoting functionality related to LaTeX formatting, particularly when excerpts are involved. The technical reasons behind these issues remain unspecified and unresolved.

It works fine for me, reply as well as quote.

@Greg Bernhardt indicated that double dollar has been permanently left in, so we can read posts originally written using double dollar. Some other factor is at play. Greg?

The problem I had didn't involve quoting the entire original post. I was quoting excerpts.

This is a known phenomenon. If you quote excerpts, then MathJax marks are often lost. @Greg Bernhardt explained it (a technical reason) in another thread but I have forgotten where and why. If you don't want to correct the code, then it's best to reply to the entire post and delete what isn't needed for your reply. I have the shortcut [/Quote]<my comment>
on the keyboard which allows me to insert comments in between.
