How did you find PF?
Google
Hi all! I’m just here to learn more about the field of physics to help guide my 15 year old son. He is gifted in math and very interested in physics, particularly quantum physics (understanding it’s a tool), and as his father and I are both business majors, I need guidance to guide him. Our local college option is the University of West Florida, where took calculus 1 & 2 last school year (100% A for both) and is enrolled this Fall for Physics 1 w/calculus, and lab (also ENC1101). Ideally this college would be where he’d finish his undergraduate degree, but I guess we’ll figure that out after he has more science classes under his belt. I’m looking forward to learning from you all!

Welcome to the forum. It's great that you want to help your son, but it would be even greater if HE joined and posted questions directly. We have 10 and 12 years old coming here and plenty of 15-year-olds, so he should not be at all worried that he is too young to participate in a serious science program. It would be excellent if he did and we would be most happy to be of help to him.

Agreed! And I’ve already sent him the link to get registered. Good to know y’all are open to helping the younger students :)

Yep, PF is great for us younger, enthusiastic people. I'm 13 and feel very welcomed here, and have learnt a lot 😃

Just make sure to supervise his forum visits every once in a while, if he does join. There are probably no bad actors here, but some spammers might join. Thankfully, mods such as Berkeman, Dale, and Doc Al keep things under control.

He's probably old enough to be able to spot spammers on his own... no? Plus as you said, our wonderful moderators keep everything under control, so I doubt anything that should concern a mom enough to check what her son is doing on PF will pop up, right?

It's a fair concern though, I get that.

Yeah. Just trying to protect people. Just a second ago, I reported a spammer who was trying to use an encrypted social media platform to sell bad stuff. Reported him immediately.

They were doing this here, on PF? I have seen people on here who refuse to listen to advice or break guidelines, but never something like that! 😲

Nope. On a pen pal site. Not going to name names, as I don't want people to use it. But the pen pal site had a Russian mod.

Here is a reddit post that someone made about how the pen pal site is overrun by spammers and creepy individuals:

Okay, I see where your concern is coming from now. It makes a lot of sense after just seeing that.

For the mom - he should hopefully be fine on PF. But after seeing this, even I will say that you should tell him to tell you if something seems off. Just for safety.

I'm going to be abit more careful too...

Thank you. Just doing my part. I am 25, but I had to deal with creepy people neatly* 10 years ago on that pen pal site. One can rarely trust a person on the internet. I have autism, so it makes it harder to read people. Hopefully, someone can make an AI that can determine a person's sentiment based on messages.

Thank you. I try. So many evil people in the world, so I try to be a light. Luckily, people here on Physics Forum seem educated and aware of bad situations. So, it should be safe.

By the way, cool STS avatar. I remember when the Shuttle program was canceled in 2011 when I was a young kid. Didn't know it at the time, but the Shuttle was a little inefficient compared to other rockets.

That's really very kind of you. I have met very few people that do things like this - hats off to you for it. PF is probably better than other forums on the Internet yes - agreed.

Haha thank you. We went to America when I was very young, and the day I saw that space shuttle in the Kennedy Space center was the day I decided I wanted to be an astrophysicist. And that dream has stuck with me till today...

You are welcome, brother. And hey, thanks for the compliments. And PF feels safe. Hats off to Berkeman and the mods. And it is nice how mods are called Mentors here. It makes them more approachable.

Back when the US actually made cool stuff when Shuttles were around. Nowadays, cool stuff comes out of the continent of Asia or Europe. Keep on following your dreams though. Space is an interesting place to study.

You must not have been active enough to see it. The mods wipe out that kind of junk pretty quickly, but it's certainly not all that rare.

Yep, it's all really cool. Fast forward 10 years, and I am learning the beauty of general physics... and of course maths, too.

Really?! I mean I guess I am only really active now it is the holidays, but J never expected outright scammers on PF. Crazy!

I have personally reported at least a couple of dozen scammers over the years and I'm sure that others catch ones I don't see and the mods remove them before I ever see them.
