AI Thread Summary
A newly discovered cave painting in Leang Karampuang, Sulawesi, Indonesia, is dated to at least 51,200 years old, making it the oldest known example of figurative art. This painting features three therianthropes and a wild pig, surpassing the previous record holder from Leang Tedongnge, which was created around 45,500 years ago. The dating of the painting was confirmed through samples collected in 2017 and analyzed earlier this year. While there are older claims of cave art from sites like the Rising Star caves, these have faced skepticism in the scientific community. The discovery highlights the long-standing human desire for artistic expression throughout history.

From the Guardian article

"The painting, believed to be at least 51,200 years old, was found at Leang Karampuang cave on the east Indonesian island of Sulawesi,

Samples were collected in 2017, but weren’t dated until earlier this year.

The previous record holder was a lifesize picture of a wild pig believed to be created at least 45,500 years ago in a cave at Leang Tedongnge.
The recently discovered painting is of three therianthropes – or human-animal hybrids – and a wild pig."

There is a paper in Nature.

There is an older claim to ancient cave art at the "Rising Star," caves/ Homo naledi site, but these have come under criticism from the scientific community.

What amazes me isn't the date, and there have been similar old findings in Australia, Gibraltar, and according to Wikipedia even older ones in South Africa. What I find astonishing is the obvious human impetus to express themselves for whatever reason right from the beginning as it seems.

Historian seeks recognition for first English king https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9d07w50e15o Somewhere I have a list of Anglo-Saxon, Wessex and English kings. Well there is nothing new there. Parts of Britain experienced tribal rivalries/conflicts as well as invasions by the Romans, Vikings/Norsemen, Angles, Saxons and Jutes, then Normans, and various monarchs/emperors declared war on other monarchs/emperors. Seems that behavior has not ceased.
