SUMMARY

The oldest known cave art, estimated to be at least 51,200 years old, was discovered in the Leang Karampuang cave on Sulawesi, Indonesia. This artwork features three therianthropes and a wild pig, surpassing the previous record held by a lifesize depiction of a wild pig from Leang Tedongnge, dated to at least 45,500 years ago. The dating of the painting was confirmed through samples collected in 2017 and published in a recent Nature paper. Previous claims of ancient cave art at the Rising Star caves have faced scientific scrutiny, highlighting the significance of this new discovery in understanding early human expression.

PREREQUISITES

  • Familiarity with archaeological dating methods used in cave art studies.
  • Knowledge of the geographical significance of Sulawesi in prehistoric studies.
  • Awareness of the historical context of cave art in relation to human evolution.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the methods of archaeological dating, particularly radiocarbon dating techniques.
  • Explore the significance of therianthropes in prehistoric art and their cultural implications.
  • Investigate other notable cave art sites in Australia, Gibraltar, and South Africa.
  • Read the full paper published in Nature regarding the recent findings in Leang Karampuang cave.

From the Guardian article

"The painting, believed to be at least 51,200 years old, was found at Leang Karampuang cave on the east Indonesian island of Sulawesi,

Samples were collected in 2017, but weren’t dated until earlier this year.

The previous record holder was a lifesize picture of a wild pig believed to be created at least 45,500 years ago in a cave at Leang Tedongnge.
The recently discovered painting is of three therianthropes – or human-animal hybrids – and a wild pig."

There is a paper in Nature.

There is an older claim to ancient cave art at the "Rising Star," caves/ Homo naledi site, but these have come under criticism from the scientific community.

What amazes me isn't the date, and there have been similar old findings in Australia, Gibraltar, and according to Wikipedia even older ones in South Africa. What I find astonishing is the obvious human impetus to express themselves for whatever reason right from the beginning as it seems.
