SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the technique of promoting particle growth by adding precipitant slowly while ensuring vigorous mixing. This method prevents the formation of local supersaturation, which can adversely affect particle size and distribution. The reference to the von Wiemarn ratio, expressed as (S-Q)/Q, suggests a quantitative approach to understanding the dynamics of precipitant addition. This technique is crucial for achieving optimal particle growth in various chemical processes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of particle growth mechanisms
  • Familiarity with precipitation chemistry
  • Knowledge of mixing techniques in chemical processes
  • Basic grasp of the von Wiemarn ratio and its applications
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of mixing speed on particle size distribution
  • Explore advanced precipitation techniques in chemical engineering
  • Learn about the von Wiemarn ratio and its implications in precipitate formation
  • Investigate methods for controlling supersaturation in chemical reactions
USEFUL FOR

Chemical engineers, researchers in materials science, and professionals involved in processes requiring controlled particle growth will benefit from this discussion.

I found this in a textbook about how to promote particle growth. I'm not really sure what it is talking about:

To promote particle growth:

" add precipitant slowly with vigorous mixing to prevent local, highly supersaturated condition where the stream of precipitant first enter the analyte."

what does that mean?

Maybe the von Wiemarn ratio? (S-Q)/Q.
