SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on Bloch's theory of band formation in solid state physics, specifically addressing the determination of s and p character in electronic bands. Participants emphasize that the character of the bands is predominantly influenced by the atomic orbitals involved, particularly in the context of the tight binding approximation. The conversation highlights the significance of understanding how these orbitals contribute to the overall electronic structure of materials.

PREREQUISITES
  • Solid state physics fundamentals
  • Bloch's theorem
  • Tight binding approximation
  • Atomic orbital theory
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the implications of Bloch's theorem in semiconductor physics
  • Study the tight binding model in greater detail
  • Investigate the role of atomic orbitals in electronic band structure
  • Learn about the relationship between band character and material properties

I notice this term coming up a lot in talks about solid state physics.
Can anyone tell me starting from Blochs theory of the formation of bands what determines their s and p character?
