SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the relevance of the general GRE scores for PhD applications in physics. The user, an MSc Physics student from India, expressed dissatisfaction with their general GRE scores of 520 in verbal and 760 in quantitative sections. It was concluded that most physics departments prioritize the Physics GRE over the general GRE, which is often a requirement for graduate school applications but not heavily weighted by the departments themselves. The user is advised to focus on preparing for the Physics GRE, especially with changes to the GRE format occurring in August.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of GRE scoring and structure
  • Familiarity with the Physics GRE format and content
  • Knowledge of graduate school application processes in the US
  • Basic proficiency in English for TOEFL preparation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the updated GRE format changes effective August 2012
  • Study strategies for the Physics GRE, including practice tests
  • Investigate specific physics departments' requirements regarding GRE scores
  • Prepare for the TOEFL exam, focusing on academic English proficiency
USEFUL FOR

Prospective PhD students in physics, academic advisors, and anyone navigating the graduate school application process in the United States.

I will be applying to US uni grad schools for a Phd for the fall 2012 semester. I just took my general GRE and am not happy with my score-verbal 520 and quant 760. I will be taking the TOEFL this summer and the Physics GRE in November. Should i take the general GRE again?
The GRE is changing in august and i am wondering how that will affect.
Also is there a cutoff for GRE scores that uni"s apply when looking at applications?
PS: I am a MSc Physics student in India.

Most physics departments don't care in the least about the general GRE. Uusually, the graduate school requires it for all applicants, regardless of whether the department uses the score for anything.

Physics departments care much, much more about the Physics GRE. I would focus my studying on that test if I were you.

Many thanks GO 1.! Thats a load off my mind!
