Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the practice of businesses stating that unemployed individuals need not apply for job openings. Participants explore the implications of this trend, its fairness, and the broader context of unemployment in the current job market.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that companies are increasingly including stipulations in job postings that discourage unemployed applicants, citing a report from a Vice-President of the Adecco Group.
  • One participant expresses skepticism about the legality and fairness of such practices, comparing it to a previous discussion about discrimination based on personal beliefs.
  • Another participant suggests that those laid off should consider self-employment as a viable alternative, implying that this could be a beneficial strategy.
  • Concerns are raised regarding the credibility of reported statistics, with one participant questioning the validity of the claim that 75% of conversations confirm this hiring practice.
  • Some participants acknowledge that the logic behind these hiring practices may be sound, despite the perceived unfairness.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express mixed views on the fairness and legality of the practice, with some agreeing that the logic may be sound while others challenge the implications and ethics of such hiring criteria. The discussion remains unresolved with multiple competing perspectives.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference anecdotal evidence and personal opinions rather than empirical data, which may limit the reliability of claims made regarding hiring practices.

As if the unemployment situation isn't bad enough.

Companies are more frequently putting caveats in their job postings that 'unemployed need not apply'. In an article today from CNN Money, a Vice-President of the Adecco Group reported that in 75% of the conversations he has had on the subject, companies or hiring bodies are confirming this requirement is being used in job listings and hiring practices.

There are a lot of excellent people that were laid off. Become "self-employed" and say that you believe that your talents would be most beneficial to a dynamic, forward thinking company.

The logic is sound even if it seems unfair.

Lovely journalism examiner

"I don't have hard numbers, but three out of the last four conversations I've had about openings, this requirement was brought up."

3 out of 4 conversations = 75% of conversations. Sure. Sigh.
