SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on time lapse simulations that depict traveling through the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and approaching the Andromeda galaxy at near-light speeds. It highlights the visual effects of such travel, emphasizing that the simulations demonstrate movement faster than light. The discussion references a specific simulation resource available at spacetimetravel.org, which provides insights into the visual representation of space travel at relativistic speeds.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of relativistic physics concepts, particularly time dilation and length contraction.
  • Familiarity with 3D simulation software and rendering techniques.
  • Knowledge of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and its significance in astronomy.
  • Basic comprehension of the Andromeda galaxy and its position in the universe.
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore advanced 3D simulation tools such as Blender or Unity for creating space travel visuals.
  • Research the effects of relativistic speeds on visual perception in astrophysics.
  • Investigate the implications of time dilation as described by Einstein's theory of relativity.
  • Examine existing astronomical simulations and their methodologies for depicting cosmic phenomena.
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy enthusiasts, physicists, educators, and anyone interested in the visual representation of space travel and relativistic effects.

In the Hubble Ultra Deep Field photograph, they show a 3D simulation of traveling through it. (Cue to about 2:00 minutes.)

Obviously the simulation is traveling through that field faster than the speed of light. What would that field actually look like while traveling near the speed of light? What would the Andromeda galaxy look like if you were approaching it near the speed of light?

Here some simulations of the visual effects:
