Participants share their thoughts on the practicality, excitement, and costs associated with different flying experiences, including trainers, Cessnas, and classic aircraft like the DC-3.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express enthusiasm for flying in trainers as a more practical and cost-effective alternative to fighter jets.
  • There are multiple offers for Cessna flights, with varying prices and experiences described, including the potential for more flights at lower costs.
  • One participant shares a personal experience of flying in a Cessna and contrasts it with a less exciting flight in a 172, suggesting that excitement can be found in different flying conditions.
  • Another participant mentions the thrill of flying in a crop duster as an appealing option.
  • There are discussions about the complexities and risks of flying in restricted airspace, particularly around Washington, D.C., with anecdotes about encounters with military aircraft.
  • One participant highlights the opportunity to fly a DC-3 without a pilot's license, noting changes in regulations regarding flight instruction.
  • There is a mention of a float plane gathering that includes a DC-3, indicating a community interest in various types of flying experiences.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions on the types of flying experiences available, with no clear consensus on the best option. Some prefer the thrill of military-style flights, while others lean towards more traditional aircraft experiences. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best choice for an exciting flight experience.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference personal experiences and anecdotal evidence, which may not provide a comprehensive view of the costs or safety associated with the various flying options discussed.

Woo hoo! I'd love to fly in a hot trainer just as well as a fighter, and the cost is more reasonable.

I can fly you in a Cessna for $1k a flight, since were practiaclly family.

You can go up 30 times instead of just once in a mig. Ill even let you fly!

I paid FAR less than $1K (more like $150) to get my uncle Jimmy to rent a 172 to fly me over my house for an aerial shot. It was not a very exciting flight, nor did we pull any G's over perhaps 1.1.

Hey, for you, we can do 2.2 G's. And ill knock that price down further to ($500) because I like you.

You want excitement? Well fly VFR in minimums of 1/2 mile visiblity!

Been in a Cessna [putt putt putt]. Already flew an SAIA Marchetti SF-260.

Been in a Cessna, too, on a number of occasions, though I would have to admit that my scariest flights were in a 182 on floats, flying with a pilot from the Maine Warden Service. The amazing "don't hit the trees" take-offs and gut-wrenching "drop in" landings were pretty disconcerting to someone who was not not familiar with the the performance envelope of that venerable aircraft. DeHaviland Beavers have long been a staple of the back-woods air-transportation in this area, but the Cessna 182's are lighter, more nimble workhorses.

I keep thinking about hitting up a crop duster for a ride. I hear that is about as good as any.

If you want that "Top Gun" adventure, we can fly into P-40 (camp david) ~20 min away, and get escorted F-16's. Or, we can cross the ADIZ w/o permission ~10 min away, and get into a buttload of trouble. Orrr, we can fly over DC and get escorted by F-16's and blackhawk helicopters.

Flying in the DC area = FUN FUN FUN!

Seriously, if you don't pay attention to where your flying over CONSTANTLY, you can get into a TON of trouble. Lots of restricted airspace.

When we flew into Lancaster, Pa, we had to make a right turn to avoid a blackhawk that was at our altitude and heading straight for us. He didnt see us until after we started turning...Bozo...

See, you want to be a pilot, and I just want a thrill ride with me at the controls.

Being chased down by F-16s isn't a thrill ride?

...for all you non-pilots who have been dying to fly the classic DC-3. A pilot's license is no longer required for this incredible flying adventure. The original pilot license requirement was based on the fact two pilots are required to take-off and land the classic airliner. Now, if you aren't a pilot, you'll start and finish the flight in the jump seat while a co-pilot we provide sits in the left seat assisting DC-3 flight instructor Dan Gryder. [continued]

Ivan, there is a float plane get-together at Moosehead lake every summer, and a regular participant is a DC-3 on floats. There are the regular contingent of DeHavilands and flying boats, too, as well as the smaller float planes.

How much does the DC-3 cost?
