SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the troll sculptures created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who has been constructing these artworks from discarded wooden pallets since 2014. In New England, there are seven trolls, with two located in Ninigrit Park, Charlestown, Rhode Island, and five at the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, Booth Bay, Maine. These sculptures, averaging twenty feet in height, serve as "Guardians of the Seeds," promoting forest conservation by safeguarding tree seeds from threats like pests and disease. Dambo's work has resulted in over 139 trolls across 20 countries, with 32 of them in the United States.

PREREQUISITES
  • Knowledge of Thomas Dambo's artistic philosophy and environmental themes
  • Familiarity with the concept of public art installations
  • Understanding of forest conservation issues, particularly regarding tree species

We just got back from hunting trolls in New England. We recently learned of Thomas Dambo a Danish rapper turned artist who since 2014 has been constructing troll sculptures out of discarded wooden pallets and local natural sources of wood across the globe. The trolls are built with the help of volunteers and are generally placed in secluded areas. There are over 139 trolls in 20 countries, of which 32 in the US are scattered in 19 states. We found seven in New England two are in Ninigrit Park in Charlestown Rhode Island and five are in the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden near Booth Bay Maine. Most were sitting or reclining, and most were about twenty feet high from ground to crown.

The trolls in Maine are "Guardians of the Seeds" preserving the future forest by collecting and hiding tree seeds for future planting so that no more tree species like the American elm and American chestnut will be lost due to foreign pests and disease. Currently, hemlock, ash, and pitch pine are threatened.
