AI Thread Summary
The Netflix documentary "A Trip to Infinity" features prominent mathematicians, physicists, and cosmologists exploring the concept of infinity and its profound implications for the universe. The film runs for 1 hour and 19 minutes and includes insights from notable figures such as Brian Greene and Carlo Rovelli. However, some viewers express skepticism about the content, particularly regarding the narrator's assertion that infinity might be considered a number, which some find off-putting and reminiscent of New Age ideas. While a few viewers attempted to engage with the film, reactions varied, with some unable to watch beyond the initial moments, citing a lack of interest or clarity. Overall, the documentary raises intriguing questions about infinity but has elicited mixed responses regarding its presentation and depth.

Might be interesting but I'm somewhat put off since at 23 seconds the female narrator at that point asks if infinity is a number and shortly answers probably so. plus some of the other stuff sounds like New Age hoo ha.

That's disappointing. At least you got as far as 23 seconds into trying to watch it; I didn't make it that far but I'm chronically video-lazy...

Oh, I watched the whole thing since it was only a couple of minutes and I was hoping that it would appeal to me but I'll be taking a pass.

I watched it twice, I missed whether it said Hilbert's hotel or Infinity something or other.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
