The discussion revolves around the results of a quiz titled "What Be Your Nerd Type?" Participants share their quiz outcomes, predominantly identifying as Science/Math Nerds, with varying percentages in other categories such as Musician, Literature, and Gamer/Computer Nerd. Many express humor and surprise at their results, particularly at the concept of a "Social Nerd," which prompts questions about its definition. Some participants critique the quiz for its reliance on self-assessment rather than knowledge-based questions, suggesting that a more accurate quiz would focus on objective measures of expertise in each category. Overall, the thread highlights a blend of self-reflection, humor, and debate about the nature of nerd culture.

I could also pick apart a few of the questions that didn't have an out, but what would be the fun in that.

So what is a social nerd?

Not two days ago, I was defining a nerd to someone as "a strong attraction to some field of interest or pastime, particularly to the detriment of social skills".

A person who is so into society as a whole that they become socially awkward.

Exp: That guy who was too good at debate so no one talked to him for fear of talking their way into a contradiction.

(Just so you know I'm making this up e.g. cite my brain)

I think that's the perfect definition. A social nerd is someone who has the charm to chat people up, but lacks any actual substance behind his conversations. Its usually gossip peddling, listening, asking questions, but if you were to really probe this social butterfly, you would find that beneath the confident exterior is a clueless little hobbit. No deep conversation is possible with such people, and as a result they are only useful for networking, finding other interesting people and just partying.

Seems mostly right, except the literature nerd should be close to zero. They kept asking about "books," but they didn't specify what they meant. I read tons of non-fiction, but virtually no novels.

Wow, I feel like I just got slapped in the face by that definition and the results of my quiz. As I doubt that was your intent and this quiz is made up, I'll refrain from being offended

Sometimes the transfer of electrons can hurt just as much as the transfer of kinetic energy between atoms or the unrestrained ripple of air molecules.

No nerd should ever be ashamed of his nerdy peccadillos.

Seems nerd has two components:
1] a surpassing interest in something academic, intellectual or scientific
2] a consequent ineptitude in the social world

If you accept that you're a nerd, then you accept #2.

Or is that the slap in the face? Perhaps you don't feel you're a nerd at all?

I like to think I'm a stealth nerd. I fly under the radar and surpise people. Like we'll be sitting in study group and someone is having trouble with their laptop and I can fix it.
Or someone will make a statement regarding a japanese cartoon and I'll know all about it and they will all look at me with shock that I like some anime despite some people's profiles for anime fans. I read science news and will get excited about obscure engineering tech all the while I can watch football and I play sports.

Stealth nerd lol

On second thought, perhaps is time to change the definition of nerd; as being "nerdy" has become more socially acceptable thereby disqualifying itself as being nerdy by definition.

If you are a nerd but not an Urkel, then you are savvy. If you are a nerd and an Urkel, you are a loser. Nerdy is like saying you are bi-curious. Holding scientific american journal on a train doesn't make you nerdy. Helping someone fillout their crossword puzzle would make you nerdy. Actually recalling an incident from your life where you know that word from and then ranting on for 20 minutes about the awesomeness of this word, meanwhile snorting and articulating with your hands makes you a nerd.

It's so obvious Dave, it's just that Lindsay Lohan can't figure it out herself!

Now, IMHO, to be a social nerd, is like being able to deal with different mentalities and exceeding the factors that inhibite dealing with these mentalities, and not dismissing your own thoughts and beleives at the same time, to share a common ground... Kind of being a diplomat.

Well, maybe you aren't this extreme, but you're in league with the crazy scientists/mathmeticians of today. Very few people have the talent of math and science is something takes a lot of brains as well. Thank whosever God you worship, or don't worship, so thank no deity whatsoever in your case, for you people! Most of us would have died off without your help.

Geeks are Nerds with social skills. Dorks and Dweebs are people without social skills that don't even have the excuse of being a Nerd.

If all geeks are nerds, all dorks are dweebs, and some dweebs are nerds, are some geeks dweebs?

I think a PHd comic could settle this for us. A diagram on that website counts as a published paper right?

Not neccesarily.

One fell swoop- presentist, moderately schizotypal, art-nerd, EN, very/distinctlyF, very/distinctlyP (don’t remember which) and married to, IIRC, an INTJ.

hmmm... They didn't ask about boats. I'm actually a boat nerd. Burchcrafts to be specific. I don't really know anything about other boats. Except that they also float, and are generally pointy on one end and not at the other. Then of course there are u-boats, which are designed not to float. And flying boats, which only need to float when they are not flying. And battery powered boats which don't go very far, but allow you put a green bumper sticker on your car that says you're and eco-geek.

...

oops.

The high anime score must be linked to the fact that every sewing question somehow involved making both normal stuff and Renaissance or anime costumes... and I did one make a powerpuff girl costume (buttercup) for a six-foot tall male colleague in grad school (the other to guys fit the 14-yr-old-girl-sized commercially available costumes).

88% Science/Math Nerd (seems average here on PF)
66% Literature Nerd
60% Musician
39% Artistic Nerd
38% Social Nerd
19% Drama Nerd
13% Gamer/Computer Nerd
8% Anime Nerd

I would say that qualifies for at least 8%.
