Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for books on calculating the spectrum of elements, with a focus on the types of spectra such as X-ray spectroscopy and emission spectra. Participants express varying levels of understanding and requirements for the material.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) seeks recommendations for books on calculating elemental spectra.
  • Some participants assert that there are no suitable books available for the OP's current level of understanding.
  • Questions are raised about the specific type of spectrum the OP is interested in, suggesting that clarification is needed.
  • One participant emphasizes the importance of foundational knowledge in quantum mechanics before tackling more advanced topics.
  • The OP expresses a desire for a book that includes detailed deductions using quantum or atomic physics, mentioning a specific reference to Sobelman’s work on atomic spectra.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally disagree on the availability of appropriate resources for the OP, with some claiming none exist at the OP's level while others seek clarification on the OP's specific needs.

Contextual Notes

There are indications of varying levels of understanding among participants, and the discussion highlights the need for foundational knowledge before advancing to more complex topics.

Hello everyone.
I 'd like to learn how to calculate the spectrum for elements. Which books are recommended?

There are no books available at your level, sorry.

Sorry, what does this question mean? What kind of a spectrum of an element? Like X-ray spectroscopy or emission spectra or something? If you could post links to your reading so far, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Given that the OP is still struggling with basic QM, there is no way a suitable text on a more advanced topic can be found.

Got to learn things in order: can't learn calculus before addition.

I want a book which has detailed deduction in using quantum/atomic physics for the application(such as He spectra etc. which is more complicated than the H spectra). Other applications also are welcome. (e.g. I am referring to Sobel'man 's Introduction to the Theory of the Atomic Spectra.)
