SUMMARY

Munkres uses 3 δ instead of δ in Exercise 22.12 to emphasize the distinction in the topology being discussed. The substitution of δ for 3 δ is valid, but it may overlook specific nuances in the exercise's requirements. Understanding this choice is crucial for accurately applying the concepts of topology presented in Munkres' textbook.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with Munkres' "Topology" textbook
  • Understanding of basic topology concepts
  • Knowledge of ε-δ definitions in analysis
  • Ability to interpret mathematical notation and exercises
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the definitions of ε-δ limits in topology
  • Study the implications of using different δ values in topological proofs
  • Analyze other exercises in Munkres' "Topology" for similar notational choices
  • Explore advanced topics in topology to deepen understanding of Munkres' methods
USEFUL FOR

Students of topology, mathematics educators, and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of Munkres' approach to topological exercises.

[SOLVED] Munkres Exercise 22.12

Homework Statement

Please stop reading unless you have Munkres topology textbook.
Why does Munkres use 3 \delta instead of \delta in part b? I get that replacing the 3 \delta by \delta works fine.
