Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the question of why magnesium nitrate does not react with sulfuric acid. Participants explore the chemical nature of the substances involved and seek to clarify the underlying principles of acid-base reactions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for clarification on the lack of reaction between magnesium nitrate and sulfuric acid, indicating confusion about the topic.
  • Another participant provides a definition of salt and presents a chemical equation involving magnesium oxide and nitric acid, which may not directly address the original question.
  • A participant reiterates their confusion about the reaction, emphasizing their understanding of what constitutes a salt.
  • One response suggests that sulfuric acid is a strong acid while the nitrate ion (NO3-) is a weak base, implying this may influence the reaction.
  • A follow-up comment encourages writing out the chemical equation and suggests that the context of the question (such as thermodynamics or acid-base theory) might provide insights.
  • Several participants acknowledge misreading the original question, indicating a lack of clarity in the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express confusion and seek clarification, but there is no consensus on the reasons for the lack of reaction between magnesium nitrate and sulfuric acid. Multiple viewpoints and interpretations are present.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference the need for original effort and adherence to posting guidelines, suggesting that the discussion may be influenced by expectations for prior knowledge or research.

why magnesium nitrate does not react with sulphuric acid?
can somebody help answering? thank you.

Physics news on Phys.org
salt: a compound formed by replacing hydrogen in an acid by a metal (or a radical that acts like a metal)

2HNO3 + MgO → Mg(NO3)2 + H2O

er.. i still don't understand why magnesium nitrate does not react with sulphuric acid?
i understand what is salt already. thankyou.

No, we can't, unless you show some original effort first. Please read the posting guidelines for this sub-forum.

well, H2SO4 is a strong acid, while NO- is a weak base?

Have you written out the equation? The unit from which this question is drawn (thermodynamics, acids/bases, etc.) might lend you a hint.

erm...i seem to have completely miss-read your question...sorry
