Why isn't each half of a sport season called a semester?

SUMMARY

The term "semester" is specifically defined as a half-year period in education, derived from the Latin word "semestris," which combines "sex" (six) and "mensis" (months). In contrast, sports seasons are divided into "halves" rather than semesters, reflecting a different temporal structure. The distinction arises from the evolution of language, where terms are not universally applicable across different contexts. Therefore, the absence of the term "semester" in sports is rooted in its precise definition and usage in educational settings.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Latin etymology, particularly the roots of the word "semester."
  • Familiarity with academic calendar structures, including semester systems.
  • Knowledge of sports terminology and season structures.
  • Basic linguistic principles regarding the evolution of language.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the etymology of other academic terms and their usage in different contexts.
  • Explore the differences between academic and sports season structures.
  • Investigate how language evolves and the factors influencing terminology in various fields.
  • Examine the role of cultural context in the adoption of specific terms across disciplines.
USEFUL FOR

Educators, linguists, sports analysts, and anyone interested in the intersection of language and cultural terminology.

Hi,

In education, I often hear about semesters, which are each halves of an academic year (the first one is from July to December and the second one is from January to June).

However, I never hear about that term in sport seasons: that is each halves of a sport season are just called halves.

So why is the term semester never used in sports, as opposed to education?

I suppose it is like how we rarely hear about extra times in education and almost always call them extensions.

As one who has learned several languages, one lesson I've learned is that it is pointless to ask "why" in regards to language usage. Languages are not designed, they just evolve. So there is no answer to your "why" question other than, "that's just the way we say it."

Because that's not what the word means.
