A different chatting service?

Does anyone know of a better service than aol instant messenger or windows messenger?

"Better" in what sense?

It seems to be unavoidable that the one all your friends use ends up being the one you use, also.

Of course, you can use free programs like gaim (Linux) or Trillian (Windows) to communicate over those services, but without using their software.
