View Full Version : busiest time
so when is the PF most busy? does it correspond to public holidays?
as PF has a world wide audience with different time zones and
different holidays i would have thought that viewing would be
predictable obviously I'm wrong.
maybe it is unstable because of some effect
like viewers attract viewers
and the more posting that is going on the more
new stuff there is to look at so the longer a
visitor it apt to stay
processes that have a kind of snowballing or avalanche
effect built into them can easily be unstable and
irregular----feastorfamine jaggedness---boom-or-bust
I dont know what the #viewing curve looks like
It may actually be more regular and predictable than we imagine.
but if it turns out, on examination, to be kind of spastic
and random then maybe that could be explained
the # viewing would be the result of the rate people visit and the
average length of stay
the rate they visit is apt to be predictable based on the timezones
with the big constituencies
but the length of time they stay would be influenced by how big a crowd
is already on hand and how much posting is going on
if the board is very quiet when you visit then probably you are less likely
to stay around.
Greg probably has studied it and understood it some
since viewership is a breadandbutter issue but he is not
going to teach us a seminar on it
did you ever use the "buddy" system?
will the system notify you by email when someone on your
buddylist is aboard? or put a popup on your screen?
the former would tend to make viewership even more spikey I would guess.

I agree with Marcus' observations on activity. I've noticed, at least down in the bargain basement known as general discussion where I tend to dwell, that the most activity is during the times that members from Europe and/or the orient are on. I find they have some of the most interesting posts. Americans are boring?

Actually there are a few predictable times, but really it's quite irregular. Even though PF is worldwide the majority of membership is in the US. So from 2am-7am PF has the least people online total. The busiest times seem to be from 1pm - 8pm. Of course fridays are the worst day of the week since alot of people are out of the house.
