I think that the issue is that its probably a rare fungus that might only affect a weakend body. Thus only a very sick person would have the infection. A person whos immune system is loseing the battle could indicate AIDS or cancer of almost any type. But some persons who use anabolic steroids or was poisened by a certain chemical might also have a weak immune system. No link but a good first guess by the doctor.

There is no way to diagnose online, only guessing, and do you really want to hear guesses that could be either optimistic, or pessimistic?

I will say this, the fungal infection would most likely be aspergillis, and as madcat8000 (great name btw) says, that speaks to a dimished or dysfunctional immune system.

This could range from all of what madcat said, to leukemia or any number of cancers. It's a reason to be concerned, and it makes me wonder if the cancer and fungal infections are related to HIV/AIDS (I'm sorry). Still, given this information, these are wild guesses, and nothing better can be given.

You shouldn't expect anything, just wait and hope for the best... a test for cancer does not mean he HAS cancer. Heck, he could have been exposed to an infection which compromised some portion of his body or immune system in general. Don't be afraid, even if it is cancer or HIV, treatments exist, and there is always hope.
