View Full Version : Need a name for my new pet spider
He/or she lives in my pan cupboard, he or she is about 2 1/2 inches across with a long fat body, she has been lucky a couple of times when she occupied one of my pans and i nearly drowned her, she hasn't made a web, so as long as she behaves i will let stay put.

Can you post a pic, or provide us with some time of reference to its character? Is your spider the social outgoing type or the strong and silent type?
You could call it Sam. That works for boys and girls.

Spiders are the worst things on the planet.
If you must name it, call it Death.

If i did that all the spiders would gang up on me and invade my property, and considering how many spiders there are i would drown in them.

I think its the strong silent type, just like me

I thought with spiders, that generally, if they are larger they are the female.

The mental image of drowning in spiders produces such terror in my mind I can not put it into words.
I was looking at the spider page that Borek linked... Now I'm jumpy and itchy...:eek:

Maybe Spidy Gonzales? [It's a unisex name...=)]

The females are usually bigger than the males, but that doesn't help much unless you know what species it is.
We used to have a pet spider at work which lived on one of the pillars in the office, called Diogenes for the obvious reason (welll, it's obvious unless you never had a proper Classical education!).
i would hate to call it jimmy if it was a female.

There are rules about these things. If you have a white cat, you have to call it whitey and if you have a black cat you have to call it blackie, and if you have a spider, you have to call it spidey. It's in the manual somewhere.
Of course there's a web site for that.

Too big to kill? I would think it would be too big to trap and take outside!
And just so you spider haters know, I refuse to kill spiders. I actually schedule them for massages at the local spa and play pleasant music to help them get to sleep. I regularly have spider only parties and hook the single spiders up with each other so there will be even MORE spiders in the world!! Soon my plan will come to fruition...and it involves Evo. Even though she doesn't know it yet.

It's hard to tell how big it is. Could you put it on your hand for reference? o:)
I had a huge orb-weaver near my computer-desk one summer. Luckily, she was on the outside of my window. Her abdomen was almost as big as a mothball. I called her Bugsy, not because she was a bug, but because our biggest, heaviest ferret was Bugsy, and she was certainly a stand-out in the size arena.

Seriously...
That spider is big enough that if I were to see it I probably would resort to irrational ways of killing it. Like throwing my copy of Moby Dick from across the room.
GOOD GOD!!!!
I could never eat cereal out of that bowl again.
That bowl would never come into my house again.
I once had to kill a spider roughly the size of a loonie (eh?) on my bathroom wall. I was shaky for about an hour afterwards. I do wish I could get over my arachnophobia, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

It's a wolf spider.
Sorry my bad, I was referring to the size of the envelope and not the species of spider :)
But that is still one huge wolf spider. I would hate to wake up with one of those on my face :bugeye:

Hey, I'm only operating on 2 neurons, I just woke up.
Anyway, it is a poisonous spider, the envelope tested negative for venom.

My grandmother was very superstitious and, if I remember correctly, though that killing a spider indoors would somehow keep money from you. But I guess she was wrong.
Finding a spider on your clothes means a letter, money or both.

I was thinking that a spider moving about in the cupboard might make a sound like "skitch skitch skitch". That was about it.
If you mean the others: Parker as in Peter Parker (Spiderman), and Anansi like the African trickster god (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anansi).

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I also don't want to create one just for this and have Evo ban me!
So today, I was giving the lawn a good mow and I walked face first into the scariest looking spider I have ever seen. I have lived in Florida for nearly my whole live, save for some time spent abroad, and I have never seen this thing before. I managed to find a picture of it online.

It looks just like that, except the one in my yard is yellow with white sides and black horns (or whatever those are). Wth is this? It was as large as a quarter!

I see those all the time around the lanai, and unfortunately, on my car  They float over from the tree next to the driveway...then when I go out to my car in the dark in the morning the lights under the side mirror illuminate the web...then I have to crawl in from the far side and drive straight to the car wash, even if it makes me late for work! (also in Florida)
But worse than that, my work location this year is in a heavily wooded patch (part of the location name is "glens"). I have seen the most frightening and exotic creatures crawling around there, including IN the building! banana spiders, wolf spiders, post nuclear apocalypse sized cockroaches, and in the spring: massive numbers of caterpillars with fuzzy white fuzz and orange horns. They fall on you at your desk from the ceiling!!! *screams* this is the stuff of nightmares..... I just wish they would trim the trees back in the parking lot so I didn't have to park UNDER the creatures. I'm terrified they are going to drop down from the tree and get comfy in my car, or worse, on my motorcycle. I've taken to getting to work 30 minutes early so I can have my choice of least under trees spaces, even though they are ALL under trees to some extent.
