View Full Version : Its insomnia all over again.

Well, its 3:34 am, so i'd post a new Insomnia thread:

Any other hardcore insomniacs?

I hate sleep personally. Too many nightmares. So i avoid sleep as much as i possibly can, and try never to be in anything but the lightest sleep, otherwise i tend to wake up screaming, or even just screaming in my sleep. Sucks for my roommate.

3:54 Am

All these people lurking and viewing but not posting. Driving me and my refresh button insane. Somebody post something somewhere please? Conversations with myself are fun, but they get me sent back to the place with the padded walls. I'm told they miss me there.

Hey its been some 25, 26 hours without sleep,i'm allowed to be entertained by the unentertaining. Especially with Kill Bill soundtracks playing in the background.

Smurf
Nov22-04, 06:09 AM
Eeeww Kill Bill, thats one of the suckiest movies I've ever not seen.

franznietzsche

Eeeww Kill Bill, thats one of the suckiest movies I've ever not seen.

Blasphemy!!

That movie (and i mean both of them combined) is a masterpiece. The first volume even jsut for cinematography and music coordination as well as fight choreography, and the second for just about everything.

The Pai-Mei sequence is unholy. As are some of the shots in the house of blue leaves. And the end credits of vol 2 to "Malaguena Salerosa" look and sound sooo cool.

yeha i'm a little obsessed. I've watched the whole movie at least 15 times, maybe more.

Smurf
Nov22-04, 06:14 AM
I don't think I've ever watched a single movie 15 times..... I don't even know if I've watched 15 movies in my entire life.

Ah ok, are you in college then? I still don't know what/where I want to do/go when I graduate (I'm in grade 12) so I'll probably end up doing a gap year.

franznietzsche
Nov22-04, 06:23 AM
Yeah, I moved into the dorms in september, its my freshman year. Yeah, if you don't know what you want to do by nowits getting close to public uni deadlines (here anyway, they're anyday now i think).

Smurf
Nov22-04, 06:25 AM
My grades arn't good enough for University, I suppose I could do it if I take a year at North Island first, but like I said, I don't even know what I wanna do.

franznietzsche
Nov22-04, 06:27 AM
Well figuring out what you want to do whould be the first choice. Although, try a summer of manual labour. Odds are you'll decide very quickly you'd rather go to college. Worked for every other person i knew who wasn't sure what they wanted to do. they very quickly decided that unskilled labour was not it, whatever it was.

Well at most colleges you ahve a while to decide what you want to major in. Mine is something of an exception to that rule. You start in your major immediately here, and general educationis spread out over all four years.

"The point of public relations slogans like "Support our troops" is that they don't mean anything... That's the whole point of good propaganda. You want to create a slogan that nobody's going to be against, and everybody's going to be for. Nobody knows what it means, because it doesn't mean anything. Its crucial value is that it diverts your attention from a question that does mean something: Do you support our policy? That's the one you're not allowed to talk about."-Noam Chomsky

That gives me a great idea on living a 30 hour day!! See if i just get on a plane and fly six time zones west in every proper day, i will experience a 30 hour day. And i think that should be long enough to math my circadian rhythm. If its not, i could just go for the 32 hour day. That would be great, then each day would be long enough to get everything done!!

There is a real disorder like that...delayed sleep phase disorder, where circadian rhythyms are quite a bit longer than 24 hours. It's not as common as advanced sleep phase disorder, where people wake up ridiculously early in the morning. If you choose a career in academics, we're very tolerant of odd sleep/wake schedules, especially those of us in labs that study circadian biology (not my main interest, but I work in a lab that does circadian work too). But, it's not a disorder if it's caused by stuff like drinking too much coffee. When you have your winter break, try cutting out the coffee and see if you can start sleeping again...harder to try giving up the caffeine addiction while you're still taking classes.

I don't think its a disorder, not entirely(in my case i mean). Its not just coffee. I really hate being asleep. Even without coffee i just naturally try to drag out my waking hours as long as possible, and minimize sleep time.

Yes, we should start narrowing the list of suspects. It must have been someone who knew about our organization...

franznietzsche
Nov23-04, 04:00 AM
WEll they obviously knew enough to know the physical locations of our computers so as to hack into them and access our secure networks. So we're looking for someone with resources, and computer skills. Probably someone operating from an isolated location, where he would be harder to track.

honestrosewater
Nov23-04, 04:01 AM
And someone with a flimsy alibi... like they were alone watching an animated television show.

franznietzsche
Nov23-04, 04:04 AM
No, surely they'd be smarter than that. If they were jsut "watching tv" we would know based upon our real time rating systems. The sudden decrease in the ratingsof an arbitrary show unknown to us would have revealed someone turning off their tv to go to a computer.

honestrosewater
Nov23-04, 04:16 AM
Of course... unless they anticipated your thinking that they would be smarter than that? Inconceivable!

franznietzsche
Nov23-04, 04:18 AM
Hmmm...

Well i've searched the access points of our organization's computer network. I found no unauthorized accesses recorded at any point. This means the perpetrator was either a member, or had access to a member's terminal. But there are only a few terminals, which narrows our search considerably.

honestrosewater
Nov23-04, 04:23 AM

No, Limbo - the virtuous non believers is for good people, and purgatory is for people with good families who pay the catholic church to let them stay there.

Thats less total evil.

Unfortunately I wake up about every 45 minutes, but usually manage to go back to sleep, so I never get quality sleep. :frown:

I'm actually officially suffering from chronic sleep deprivation. My doctor has prescribed sleeping pills, but I hate taking medication.

Ambien has to be the worst, it only last 3 hours and if you don't fall asleep immediately, it causes some very bizarre halucinations. I've talked to others that have taken it and they've all experienced the same thing, I'm surprised it hasn't become as popular as quaalude. :surprised

Evo
Nov25-04, 12:37 AM
That must be awful. Have you ever tried melatonin? No, I haven't.

My problem is that my hands fall asleep and that painful sensation wakes me up. I've had all kinds of tests done and apparently I am the healthiest person on the face of the earth. My doctor has no explanation for what causes my hands to fall asleep, he thinks it's small veins and if I bend my wrists in my sleep, the blood circulation is cut off. So he prescribes sleeping pills in the hope that I will be too drugged to wake up, but I wake up anyway. :frown:

His other suggestion was to tie my hands/arms to boards so I couldn't bend them in my sleep. The problem is, I can't sleep with boards tied to my hands and if I could, I'd probably hit myself in the head in my sleep and cause even worse problems.

I only take something if I have an important meeting in the morning and need more than 45 minutes of sleep. Needless to say, I go through most days in a daze.

Moonbear

That must be awful. Have you ever tried melatonin?

Yeah, maybe that would work for you Evo. I tried it once, it didn't help me fall asleep any sooner (my clock is too far off for a little melatonin pill to reset), but when I did fall asleep, I found I slept much more soundly...didn't wake up as many times at night. I think all the tablets over-the-counter (in the vitamin section) are the same dosage (I think 10 mg, but I'd have to check on that). Just take one about a half hour before you want to go to sleep.

honestrosewater
Nov25-04, 01:08 AM
I took melatonin for a while when I was 12 (10 years ago), but I didn't take it regularly so I can't testify to its effectiveness. I have been reading over some studies and articles, and they are all positive. BTW melatonin is produced by your body; I know that is one of the first questions I ask when considering medication.

Your case does present a problem since anything you use to stabilize your hands may itself cut off the circulation
Hmm...

I've heard about this pretty loose girl in my department who everyone says is "sleeping around"...so I thinks it's got something to do with you-know-what.

One of my friends and I used to have this ongoing joke...we had a theory...yeah, one of those kinds of theories:

Conservation of Sleep
There's only a finite quantity of sleep in the world. If somebody starts to sleep too much and takes more than their fair share, someone else must be deprived of sleep.

I figure I'm not getting any sleep for a while since he and his wife and baby (who already steals WAY more than his fair share of sleep, but babies are allowed to do that since their parents normally don't get to use any of that sleep) are all on vacation now, sleeping in every day, stealing all of our sleep apparently! :grumpy: I'm going to have to have a LONG talk with them when they return. They can't ALL get sleep at the same time.

I didn't see this post before I added mine about melatonin. Probably won't help much in that case, you'll just wake up even groggier. I had a problem a little like that for a while, somehow I would sleep in some strange way that I'd either cut off circulation to my arm, or pinch a nerve or something, and would wake up with my arm hurting like pins and needles. I just piled up more pillows on the bed and manage to use the pillows to keep me from getting turned around too much. But I don't know if that's what your problem is.

There is something called restless legs syndrome that's like that but for legs. I don't know what causes that, so don't know if the same could happen to your hand.

honestrosewater
Nov25-04, 02:03 AM
Aha! Panyhose and heat ;) Okay, I'm very tired. But pantyhose are the least restrictive, best breathability (?!), they're cheap, and easy to use (and a lot softer than boards!). And heat to quicken the blood flow to your hands when they wake you. Sorry, that's the best I've got for now

You know, I was thinking (sometimes I do that, and since I've been posting between housecleaning for tomorrow, I've had lots of time to think between posts)...do you only need to keep your wrist straight, or your whole arm? If it's just your wrists, then they have those lightweight braces for carpal tunnel syndrome. You could just put them on at night. There are ones just made out of that elastic Ace Bandage type material that are soft, so wouldn't need to worry about clonking yourself in the head with boards.

That, or maybe you need a boyfriend who will tie you to the bedposts at night so you won't sleep on your hands?
