That reminds me about "HCN has a almond-like odor that can be detected at concentrations ten times higher than the lethal level".

Jokes aside, it didn't have to be someone tasting plutonium for a purpose - could be some kind of accident. Not saving the information about the taste would be a waste of opportunity.
