What is the Historical Development of String Theory?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the historical development of string theory, particularly focusing on Klein's interpretation regarding charge and the assumption of higher-dimensional space. Participants recommend the PBS program "The Elegant Universe," which is based on Brian Greene's book, as a resource for understanding the evolution of string theory. The program is noted for its informative content, especially in the latter segments that detail the theory's progression. However, there is a request for more academic resources to deepen the understanding of string theory's history.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, particularly in theoretical physics.
  • Familiarity with string theory fundamentals and its significance in modern physics.
  • Knowledge of higher-dimensional space concepts and their implications in physics.
  • Awareness of key figures in string theory, such as Brian Greene and Felix Klein.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the historical context of string theory development through academic papers.
  • Explore Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" for a comprehensive overview of string theory.
  • Investigate the implications of higher-dimensional spaces in theoretical physics.
  • Study Klein's contributions to theoretical physics and their impact on string theory.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for theoretical physicists, students of physics, and anyone interested in the historical context and evolution of string theory.

I just wanted to know about the history of the string theory development.
I mean the klein's (or someone else!) interpretation about the charge that resulted in assumption of higher order dimentions of space.
I just wanted to know the historical story of it.
Any link will be usefull.
Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Check out http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html

Its a program made based on the book 'The elegant universe'. The second half of the second program (there are three programs in total) and the third one give a quick run through how the theory evolved.

PS

Thanks primal schemer,
But something more academic!
