What is torque
The discussion revolves around the concept of torque, its definition, measurement, and implications in automotive performance. Participants explore both theoretical aspects and practical applications, particularly in relation to car engines and acceleration.
Participants express differing views on the importance of torque in automotive performance. While some agree that higher torque can improve acceleration and load capacity, others argue that power is the more critical factor, leading to an unresolved discussion on the role of torque versus power in cars.
Some assumptions about ideal transmission conditions and the relationship between torque and power remain unexamined, and the discussion does not resolve the complexities of how torque impacts vehicle performance in real-world scenarios.
Most people would answer, 'yes'. But the only place you actually need torque in cars is at the wheels. The job of the engine is to produce power not torque.chound said:is it better to have higher torque in cars?
Engine speed remaining equal, yes it's better to have more torque because that means you have more power. OTOH, if you are comparing 2 cars where car A has more torque (at the crankshaft, since that's usually what's meant), but the same power as car B, then the answer is no. You just gear car B differently (lower), and it has the same performance. (This re-iterates Ceptimus, but it is always helpful to hear the same things explained in more than one way.)chound said:is it better to have higher torque in cars?
