Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the average height of early male humans in comparison to Neanderthals, exploring anatomical and cognitive differences between the two groups. It touches on aspects of anthropology and evolutionary biology.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that the average height of male Neanderthals was between 5'6" and 5'7".
  • Another participant suggests that early male humans were about the same size as Neanderthals and had a similar brain size.
  • A participant questions whether Neanderthals had larger brains.
  • One reply indicates that while brain mass was similar, the proportions differed, with Neanderthals having a greater area for memory and early humans being better suited for problem-solving.
  • A later contribution asserts that Neanderthals were shorter but heavier and more muscular, with larger brain mass relative to body size, while also noting the differences in brain partitioning.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the height and brain size of early male humans compared to Neanderthals, indicating that multiple competing perspectives remain without a clear consensus.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the definitions of "average height" and "brain size," as well as the implications of body mass and muscularity on height comparisons.

Average height of male neanderthals were 5'6-5'7, what was the average height of early male humans (us)?

Actually about the same size..we even had the same size brain

But theirs was bigger right

Well the mass was about the same, just proportioned differently. The area for memory was much greater then ours. Where ours is better suited for problem solving.

Neandertals were shorter than our ancestors, but they were also heavier since they were a lot more muscular. Their brains' mass was actually larger than ours, even compared to their body size. You're right that it was partitioned differently.
