Current Theory of Expansion of Space: What Do Scientists Think?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The current theory of the expansion of space posits that the universe is indeed expanding, meaning that the distances between galaxies are increasing over time. This expansion does not imply that objects within the universe, such as humans or planets, are physically expanding; rather, it is the space between them that is stretching. The latest issue of Scientific American provides an accessible overview of this concept, making it easier for the general public to grasp the complexities of cosmic expansion.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of general relativity
  • Familiarity with cosmological principles
  • Basic knowledge of astrophysics
  • Awareness of current scientific literature, such as Scientific American
NEXT STEPS
  • Read the latest issue of Scientific American for insights on cosmic expansion
  • Explore the implications of general relativity on cosmic structures
  • Investigate the role of dark energy in the universe's expansion
  • Study the observable effects of cosmic expansion on distant galaxies
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, science communicators, and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of the universe's expansion.

Does anyone know the current theory for the expansion of space?

I was thinking about this the other day. Do scientists think the universe is expanding as in extending in size? Because if it's expanding, won't everything expand with it? Including us.

The latest issue of Scientific American has a discussion of this in laymen's terms which looks really nice (i have just glanced over it at present).
