This seems like such a simple question but I cannot find a direct answer on the web. Please enlighten me geniuses of PF! Thanks in advance. :)
The discussion revolves around the question of why dairy products should not be consumed while taking antibiotics, particularly focusing on tetracycline and its interactions with calcium. Participants explore the mechanisms behind these interactions, potential side effects, and personal experiences related to antibiotic use and dietary choices.
Participants express a range of views on the timing and effects of consuming dairy while on antibiotics. While there is agreement on the general principle that dairy can affect antibiotic absorption, there is uncertainty regarding the specifics of timing and individual experiences, leading to no clear consensus.
Participants reference specific time frames for avoiding dairy relative to antibiotic intake, but there is variability in personal interpretations and adherence to these guidelines. The discussion does not resolve the nuances of individual responses to dietary choices while on antibiotics.
This discussion may be useful for individuals taking antibiotics who are concerned about dietary interactions, as well as those interested in the pharmacological effects of medications and their interactions with food.
Tetracycline and similar drugs are calcium chelators. When you eat tetracycline and calcium at the same time, some of the tetracycline binds (chelates) to the calcium in your stomach. When it is bound like that, your body can't use it.Dynamis said:Why can't you consume dairy products while on antibiotics?
When I was on tetracycline, the prescription bottles always had a sticker that said not to eat dairy within two hours before or one hour after taking a tetracycline dose. I would imagine there is a similar sticker on your bottle.Dynamis said:I ate the chocolates 4 hours after I took the antibiotics so do you think my body would have absorbed most of the antibiotics by then?
