Homework Help Overview

The problem involves a scenario where a person is standing on a scale in an elevator that accelerates upward. The original poster provides the scale reading when the elevator is at rest and seeks to determine the new reading during acceleration, referencing Newton's second law.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to apply Newton's second law and questions whether the equation N - W = ma is appropriate. Other participants clarify the relevance of gravitational acceleration and question unit conversions.

Discussion Status

Participants are exploring the application of Newton's laws in the context of the problem. There is an ongoing discussion about the correct interpretation of forces and the appropriate units to use, with no clear consensus yet.

Contextual Notes

There is a mention of gravitational acceleration in different units, and some participants express uncertainty about unit conversions and the definition of mass in the context of the problem.

you are standing on a scale in an elevator. the scale reads 176lb when the elevator is at rest. the elevator begins to accelerate upward at 12ft/s^2. what is the reading of the scale?

i converted 176lb to 80kg. i know the sum of all forces equals mass*acceleration

but i don't know what to do next? is it N-W=ma?

Yes, it's just Newton's 2nd law.

Also: No need to change units. What's the acceleration due to gravity in the given units of ft/s^2?

?

u said don't change the units but if the equation is N=ma+W what is m? do you divide 176lb by 9.8?

What is g in units of ft/s^2 ? (Look it up if you don't know.)
