Hey, is an EE graduate degree worthwhile?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the value of pursuing a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) given a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2. Participants emphasize that while a higher GPA can enhance graduate school applications, it is not the sole determinant of success in the field. The conversation highlights the importance of the institution's reputation and the specific companies one aims to work for, particularly in competitive areas like video game console design. Ultimately, a bachelor's degree may suffice for certain roles, but advanced degrees can open doors to higher-level positions and specialized work.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Electrical Engineering fundamentals
  • Familiarity with graduate school admission requirements
  • Knowledge of the video game industry and its educational expectations
  • Awareness of GPA implications in academic and professional settings
NEXT STEPS
  • Research graduate school programs in Electrical Engineering and their GPA requirements
  • Explore career paths in video game console design and necessary qualifications
  • Investigate the impact of school reputation on job opportunities in EE
  • Learn about the differences in roles available with a bachelor's versus a master's degree in EE
USEFUL FOR

Students considering graduate studies in Electrical Engineering, aspiring video game designers, and individuals evaluating the impact of GPA on career prospects in technical fields.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to make my undergraduate GPA super high

My cumulative won't get much higher than 3.2 even if I get 4.0 for the next two years, so I won't be able to get into any honors societies, and the only reason I can see to bother temporarily memorizing every stupid detail to ace my finals and get super-high grades is so that I could get into graduate school

But is that necessary in EE? What kind of work can you do with a master's or doctorate that you can't do with a bachelor's degree?

I'm thinking I'd like to go into the design of video game consoles, but I'm concerned that a Bachelor's will just leave me qualified to be some phd's <strike>*****</strike> technician

Depends on where you want to get your advanced education and what companies are looking at your educational background. Ivy league schools will want only the best candidates, compared to an average state school. Same for companies, if you want to produce games for SquareSoft,Lucas Arts, etc. start kicking ass in school! ~Later Dave

can i get a ms degree with 2.5 gpa? EE is hard.
