Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around whether the Intel Prescott processor is a 64-bit processor, with participants exploring Intel's plans for 64-bit desktop and mobile processors in comparison to AMD's offerings. The scope includes technical specifications, future product releases, and the implications of existing technology.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire about the timeline for Intel to release a 64-bit desktop or mobile processor, similar to AMD's offerings.
  • One participant states that Prescott is a Pentium 4 with specific manufacturing details and lacks 64-bit capabilities.
  • Another participant mentions that Intel's first x86 server processor with 64-bit capabilities, code-named Nocona, is scheduled for release, but emphasizes that it is a server chip.
  • There is a note that Intel has not publicly announced plans for a desktop equivalent to AMD's Athlon 64.
  • One participant claims that Prescott technically has 64-bit extensions, but they are not enabled for the current socket, with potential plans to enable them in a future socket.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the capabilities of the Prescott processor and the status of Intel's 64-bit desktop processor plans. There is no consensus on whether Prescott can be considered a 64-bit processor.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight the distinction between server and desktop processors, and the discussion includes references to specific product names and timelines that may not be fully resolved.

When will intel issue 64bit desktop/mobile processor like AMD did?

Computer science news on Phys.org
No. Prescott is a Pentium 4 manufactured on a 90 nanometer (0.9 micron) process with a 1 MB L2 cache instead of a 512 MB L2 cache.

Here are Intel's 64 bit plans.

when will intel roll out 64-bit desktop processor ?

"Intel's first x86 server processor with 64-bit capabilities is still on schedule to ship in the second quarter, Otellini said. Servers with the new chip, code-named Nocona, should ship in July, he said."

Note: that's a server chip! Plans for desktop... not on any charts so far.

Intel's Athlon 64 - where is it?

Thank you for the correction, Jikx. We might then say Nocona is Intel's equivalent of the AMD's budget 32-bit/64-bit server chip Opteron, and that Intel does not yet have a publicly-announced Athlon-64-like gamer (desktop) chip in the pipeline.

TECHNICALLY it is

Prescott has 64 bit extensions, HOWEVER theyre not enabled, and won't be enabled for the current socket. When they move to the new one (757 I believe?) there are plans to turn it on.
