Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around resources for learning about string theory, particularly focusing on the works of Brian Greene. Participants share their experiences with different media, including books and television series, and provide recommendations for a first-year physics student interested in the topic.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in string theory after watching NOVA's Elegant Universe and seeks recommendations for further learning.
  • Another participant claims that Brian Greene's book is superior to the TV series, suggesting it is more detailed and less repetitive.
  • A different participant emphasizes that the book contains advanced material that may not be covered until later years in college.
  • One participant mentions a new book by Brian Greene, The Fabric of The Cosmos, indicating it as a follow-up resource.
  • A participant notes they are preparing a lecture on string theory and related theories that could lead to a Theory of Everything (TOE), suggesting ongoing interest and exploration in the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that Brian Greene's book is a valuable resource, but there are varying opinions on the accessibility of its content for a first-year student. The discussion does not reach a consensus on the best resource overall.

Contextual Notes

Some participants note that the material in Greene's book may be advanced for early undergraduate study, indicating a potential limitation in its immediate applicability for beginners.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for first-year physics students, educators preparing lectures on string theory, and anyone interested in exploring advanced theoretical physics concepts.

Hi there!

I've just finished watching the NOVA's Elegant Universe in Spanish. I've never heard of this superstring, brane, M theory but I find it fascinating.

My question is, where can I learn more about this? Is it worth buying Brian Greene's book? What do you suggest to this first year physics student?

Thanks!

I heard the book is much better than the TV series. The book is supposed to be more detailed and less repetitive.

From the book you can learn much more than from the movie!
The book is far more detailed and precise.
Some of the stuff in the book is very advanced:
you'll not be learning it in college;
or at least not before your third or fourth year and maybe not even then

And when you've finished it you can start Brian's new one:
The Fabric of The Cosmos.

sweet! I didn't know he had a new book.
I'll be getting that

Hello everyone by the way

Yes, both are good sources, I am giving a lecture on String theory and other possible theroies that could lead to the devlopment of TOE in England this summer. It should be interesting.
