Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by a user attempting to connect a Meade LX200 GPS telescope to a PC using software. Participants explore software compatibility, potential issues with a homemade RS-232 cable, and methods for testing the cable.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports difficulties in connecting their Meade LX200 GPS telescope to a PC using "Starry Night Pro" version 4.5 and ACP3, noting that the software does not list LX200GPS as supported.
  • Another participant asserts that the LX200GPS uses the same command set as the LX200, suggesting that "Starry Night Pro" should work with it, and proposes that the issue may lie with the homemade RS-232 cable.
  • A request for clarification on what "SNP" refers to is made, along with a request for a link to the software.
  • One participant recommends using an ohmmeter to test the cable for proper construction.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the software's compatibility with the LX200GPS, with some asserting it should work while others remain uncertain. The discussion about the cable's condition also reflects uncertainty, with no consensus on whether the cable is indeed the source of the problem.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not provided definitive tests or outcomes regarding the cable's functionality, and there is ambiguity surrounding the software's compatibility with the specific telescope model.

Hi friends,
I'm a user of Meade's 12" LX200GPS and I was looking for the software to connect my telescope to my pc, I installed "Starry night pro" version 4.5 and ACP3 but they didn't work. Starry night only had LX200 & AutostarII in the list it supported but not LX200GPS.
Does anybody know any kind of downloadable software that can surely work with our case?
With respect to the fact that my RS-232 cable is handmade, can the cause of the problem be in the cable? How can I test it?

Thanks a lot

The LX200GPS uses the exact same command set as the LX200 -- it's essentially an industry standard. SNP can work with the LX200GPS just fine. Perhaps your cable is bad.

What is SNP?
Could you give me a link for it?
&
How can I be sure the Cable is bad?

SNP = Starry Night Pro.

Use an ohmmeter to verify that the cable is built properly.
