Projects for an aspiring engineer

I'm looking for a project to do in my spare time that has to do with physics and or engineering. I don't have much experience in either of the subjects, but I do understand the basic concepts of physics. I'm looking for somewhat of a challenge. What would be a good project for me?

A simple machine like a trebuchet, ballastae or some other medieval siege engine is a nice starting point. You can do lots of different things with them, and there's places to go to for help.

Or, find something around your house that you don't like, and devise a creative way to fix it.
