Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for software capable of scanning equations and converting them accurately into Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF formats. The focus includes the challenges faced with existing solutions and the specific needs of users regarding optical character recognition (OCR) for mathematical content.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about software that can scan equations and convert them into Word and PDF formats.
  • Another participant suggests clarifying the term "scan" and questions whether the user is looking to insert equations into Word documents.
  • A participant describes issues encountered with scanned documents, including strange characters and misaligned symbols, indicating a need for better OCR capabilities.
  • One participant expresses skepticism about the existence of software that can effectively perform OCR for equations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the availability of effective software for scanning equations, and skepticism about current solutions is present.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights limitations in current OCR technology for mathematical content, but specific assumptions and definitions of "scanning" remain unresolved.

You might want to specify your needs a little more precisely. What do you mean by "scan?" Are you just trying to put equations into MS Word documents?

Well, i had scanned a few pages paper which contains equation but it came out with some weird character, symbol, numerator and denominator apart...So, i am finding a scanning program that can recognise well the equation and convert it to Word document. Any idea?

Ohhh you mean do some kind of optical character recognition (OCR)... I would very much doubt any such software exists.
