What gives silicon that 'grey painted glass' look. No other element i can think of has such a distinctive color and surface texture.
Silicon exhibits a unique grey appearance primarily due to the presence of a silicon dioxide (SiO2) surface layer that scatters light. While pure silicon is a shiny metallic silver, the grey color often results from oxidation or surface coatings. The semiconductor properties of silicon, characterized by a bandgap of 1.12 eV, also contribute to its optical characteristics. Polishing or etching silicon can alter its surface texture and appearance.
